Any database can remove the rows that no longer fit. It takes a millisecond and it is completely unsatisfying, because the part that felt like detective work has been done by something else. Here is what the manual version is actually giving you.
A visible record of your own thinking
Crossing out a name turns a thought into a trace. The grid slowly becomes a map of your reasoning, where every struck line says this possibility was tested and it failed. The names still standing gain weight, because they survived something rather than because an algorithm quietly hid the rest.
That trace is also how you recover from a mistake. A filtered list forgets what it removed; a crossed-out grid shows you exactly what you decided, so you can find the step where you went wrong.
Small decisions build momentum
One elimination is a small thing. A whole row disappearing at once is a breakthrough. The action is trivial to perform, but the cause belongs entirely to you, and that connection — read a clue, make a judgement, watch the field shrink — is what turns a long list into an investigation instead of a spreadsheet.
Games research keeps rediscovering the same thing: agency is not about how many options you get, but about whether outcomes trace back to your decisions. Elimination puzzles are unusually pure on that axis. Nothing is random after the grid is dealt.
The computer still has plenty to do
This is not a case against automation. The machine should do the parts that are genuinely mechanical:
- Generate a case that is consistent and has exactly one answer.
- Count how many names are still standing.
- Refuse to publish a puzzle whose clue chain is unsound.
- Remember where you were when you close the tab.
What it should not do is interpret a clue on your behalf. That single line is the difference between a puzzle and a form.
Why the help still exists
There are two optional tools: highlighting what one clue rules out, and checking your crossings for a mistake. Both cost time on your final score, and neither is required to finish anything.
They exist because being stuck on a clue you cannot parse is not interesting, while being stuck on a clue you can parse but have not applied is the whole game. The price keeps the choice honest: use help when you are genuinely blocked, not as a substitute for reading.
