There are two honest ways to make an elimination puzzle harder. You can make each clue demand more, or you can make each clue give less. Marathon is the second one, and it produces a completely different kind of pressure.
Two shapes of difficulty
On the standard tracks, each clue is chosen to cut the field roughly in half. Six or seven of them take a large grid down to one name, and the challenge is reading each one correctly.
On marathon, each clue is chosen to leave most of the field standing — closer to seven names in ten. Nothing is hard to work out. There is simply a great deal of it, and you have to stay accurate all the way through.
Why it starts higher up the ladder
Marathon begins two rungs further along than the other tracks. Grinding a ten-name grid down in small steps is impossible: there are not enough gentle clues available, and forcing it produces either no level at all or a sharp chain wearing marathon's name.
So the smallest marathon grid is twenty names with nine clues, and the largest runs to sixteen clues across two hundred names.
How to play it differently
- Do not hunt for the sharpest clue. There isn't one. Applying clues roughly in order costs you almost nothing here, which is the opposite of the advice in clue order.
- Batch by clue, not by name. With sixteen clues and a wide grid, reading every name against all sixteen is exhausting. Take one clue and sweep.
- Take breaks between sweeps. Accuracy decays with fatigue, and this track is long enough for that to matter.
- Use the checker when you feel your attention slipping — 45 seconds is cheap compared with rebuilding a two-hundred-name grid.
Who it is for
Marathon suits players who find the standard tracks intellectually fine but too short, and players who enjoy the meditative side of a long elimination. It is not a good place to learn the clue types — the sheer number of them will bury a beginner. Start on easy, learn to read every clue at a glance, then come here for the long haul.
